Culture

Chicago is a heavy-hitter when it comes to museums. The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as dozens of smaller sized museums and cultural centers call Chicago home. If you have the time, they’re all worth a visit! Easy to find in the city’s Museum Campus on South Michigan Ave, each of these mammoth centers of learning are just steps apart!

Though I love them all, my personal favorite is:

  1. The Art Institute of Chicago

The building itself is a magnificent sight to behold. In the Beaux-Arts architecture style, the Art Institute features a Renaissance facade iconic to the city. Housing 273  galleries and over 68,000 works, visitors can view world-renowned pieces like Grant Wood’s American Gothic and Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. The museum is also home to an impressive collection of ancient art and artifacts, medieval arms & armor and  an expansive modern wing. There’s truly something for everyone, and I’d say it’s definitely worth a long afternoon.

The city of Chicago also has a spectacular performing arts scene. With over 200 theaters — such as the Goodman Theatre, the Lookingglass Theater, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and the Steppenwolf  — visitors can take in Broadway productions, Pulitzer-prize winning plays, world class dance troupes and transcendent musical performances.

2. The Chicago Theatre

The theater’s famous marquee is both iconic and rare.

The eighth highest grossing theatre of its size worldwide, it isn’t just a local landmark, but an American one. A highly sought after venue for live events from concerts, comedy shows, plays and other entertainment acts, both the stage and the theater’s seats have welcomed the stars.

3. The Chicago Cultural Center

I love to come here whenever I have free time. Another example of stunning Chicago architecture, the Chicago Cultural Center also offers free art and music exhibitions. Even a stroll throughout the building alone is both relaxing and entertaining. Tourists can find an information center on the first floor, and climb to see the world’s largest Tiffany glass dome in a breathtaking space that is often used as a venue for weddings or special events.
